Earthly Delights features the work of artists who rejected one of the central tenets of modernism – the elimination of content and external references – in favor of embracing the decorative, feminine, and playful. This irreverence takes a variety of forms. Swiss artist Balthus remained a committed realist, even though he worked during the time of Surrealism. Michelangelo Pistoletto turned to history painting, intentionally referencing styles and forms considered passé. Lynda Benglis, challenged the feminist movement and persisted in the production of non-representative sculpture rather than painting.
