Chicago’s Midway Airport and O’Hare Airport have a combined total of one million flights per year that transport 100 million passengers. Yet, one of these two airports has the highest cancellation rate in the country- responsible for 20% of North America’s cancellations and delays.

If your thoughts are on Midway Airport vs O’Hare, and want to know which airport to fly in and out of, you’ll benefit from these 7 insider tips on why Midway wins the Midway vs O’Hare battle:

01

MIDWAY IS EASIER TO NAVIGATE

At Midway Airport, the movement from ticketing through security to the gate is (usually) short and sweet. Unlike O’Hare, you don’t need to bring your hiking shoes, water bottle, and walking stick for your trek to gate K19. Midway only has A, B, and C, and they are as easy as 1-2-3.

See the new latest Midway Concessions Map here.

02

MIDWAY IS CLOSER TO DOWNTOWN THAN O’HARE

If you are headed to the Loop, the Orange “L” line from Midway will get you there about 20 minutes quicker than the Blue “L” line from O’Hare. And, the CTA charges double for all train departures from O’Hare.

For those that prefer taking the road, Midway (MDW) is 6 miles closer to downtown’s Willis Tower than O’Hare (ORD)- which is especially significant during rush hour.

03

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES

Southwest Airlines’ customer service and value are universally lauded. They do it all right. They provide a respectful, comfortable, efficient travel experience at reasonable prices- especially when booked in advance. Two checked bags are always allowed in addition to one carry-on.

Southwest Airlines’ connections are usually more efficient and direct than the full-service airlines. Also, as far as scheduling, many times SWA schedules will work better — whether it’s business or pleasure. Flight frequency on SWA often wins over many airlines.

Southwest Airlines only flies out of Chicago’s Midway Airport. It doesn’t have any flights from O’Hare.

04

TSA SPEED

Midway has only one security area- but it has many lines which make it fast!

TSA agents at Midway are reported to be much more professional than in other locations, possibly due to the more centralized layout and tighter oversight.

And, unlike O’Hare, Midway’s TSA lets you pick which line you want to get in. So, you can choose to not get behind the family going on vacation with their hands full of dolls, toys, and diaper bags.

05

DEPENDABILITY

The end-to-end process of flying out of Midway is more dependable than O’Hare. From less risk of traffic snarls to avoiding the crapshoot of O’Hare’s security wait times.

Midway consistently beats out O’Hare in on-time records, reports the Chicago Tribune.

With over 20% of all North American cancellations and delays coming out of O’Hare, it is clear that Midway wins the O’Hare vs Midway Airport challenge.

As it is a smaller airport, Midway is more agile in its response to weather issues.

06

LESS HECTIC

Midway is less overwhelming and crowded than O’Hare. With fewer people to share space with, with just 3 simple terminals, and with less distance to get to your gates, Midway has a dose of small-town airport.

07

BETTER VALUE

While the Ultra Low-Cost Carriers (ULCC ) Spirit and Frontier fly out of O’Hare, they aren’t always the best value.

Value includes many factors including flexibility of making changes, baggage allowances, comfort, service, and total price.

Most flyers find that flying Southwest out of Midway, especially when done with advance purchase, significantly reduces the cost and their personal wear-and-tear.

With shorter and less expensive commute times to downtown Chicago, quicker transit times in the airport, a higher on-time record, and the competitive fares available from Midway flights, Midway Airport has become the airport of choice for pleasure and business travelers.

We’d love to hear your experiences navigating the O’Hare vs Midway Airport choice. Which do you prefer and why? Please leave your comments below.

May 20th, 2017, was a big day at Midway Airport. Gone were some of the favorite eateries of passengers, including McDonald’s, Potbelly’s, and Harry Caray’s. Surviving restaurants and bars, such as Reilly’s Daughter, were left as little more than a skeleton of its past self- as the name was bought by a third-party, rumored to be Midway Partnership, the entire staff was replaced, and drink prices were nearly doubled. Regulars have declared it dead through its corporate washing.

Why did this all happen?

Let’s let the city explain in its own words:

Midway Partnership was selected as the master concessionaire for Midway following a thorough Request for Proposals (RFP) process that began in the fall of 2015 and was approved by the Chicago City Council earlier this year. Under the agreement, Midway Partnership will invest $75 million to renovate and expand concessions at Midway. Phase 1 includes an overhaul of the existing concessions areas, stores and restaurants, to be followed by a major renovation to increase the concessions area by 26,000-square-feet for Phase 2, yielding a total of nearly 70,000-square-feet of concessions space at Midway.

Through increased concessions space and a greater variety of offerings, sales per enplanement are projected to double after the project is completed. In all, this new program is expected to increase annual sales tax revenue to the City by $10 million annually once the project is complete in 2020.

The Concessions Redevelopment Program is a critical part of the largest investment plan for Midway International Airport. The Midway Modernization Program, announced by Mayor Emanuel in 2015, directs a $323 million investment into the airport, including expansions to both the passenger security checkpoint area and terminal parking garage, and a complete renovation and expansion of Midway’s concessions by 2020.

Source: City of Chicago

According to the Midway Partnership, the project will yield these results:

  • Double the number of permanent concession jobs to 1,400
  • Contribute an additional $10 million in sales tax revenue to City of Chicago
  • Secure ACDBE participation above City’s target to 41% – one of the highest in the United States
  • Provide more opportunities for local brands and operators
  • Enhance the passenger experience

ACDBE is The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) “Disadvantaged Business Enterprise” (DBE) program which apparently is a way to funnel federal tax dollars to local projects.

By my reading, the city leased the airport’s concessions to this private party – Midway Partnership – in return for their investment in new facilities at the airport. The goal was mainly to increase jobs, tax revenues, and passenger facilities. I use “facilities” and not their word “experience” as many of the revenue-producing changes in the airport have disappointed passengers.

Who exactly is Midway Partnership? It consists of three corporations: Vantage Airport Group, SSP America, and Hudson Group. All are big players in the airport industry, in financing, food service, and retail, respectively.

How long will Midway Partnership reign over airport concessions? Through 2032. Just 15 years.

So, the next time you pass through Midway Airport and you wish you had different food options or better deals, keep in mind that by being a good consumer at the airport that you are doing your part in contributing to its enhancement. Think of it as indirect yet necessary taxation.

Not sure where to eat or drink in the airport? We’ve outlined all Midway Airport restaurant options and where to get great coffee in Midway Airport. Read them- an educated consumer is a happy consumer.

Keep in mind, many travelers still prefer Midway Airport to O’Hare for solid reasons.

Travelers have long been frustrated and disappointed with coffee options at Midway Airport. This is partially because Midway has always had limited options, but also, its best coffee has always been hard to find. Follow the biggest and brightest sign and you’ll end up at a place with mediocre coffee at best. Do your due diligence and great coffee has always been available.

There was a recent shakeup in the Midway Airport dining scene and, with that, some great new coffee options exist. So, don’t panic! We’ll get to them just after we visit some of the complaints of the past that dominate the Twittersphere.

But it wasn’t as despair as travelers made it out to be. Unknown to many was:

Yes, Intelligentsia, Chicago’s longstanding favorite local coffee roaster had a kiosk serving up its best stuff.

But things changed in a huge way at Midway Airport on May 20th of 2017… all but 4 of the food and beverage vendors changed over. And, the Intelligentsia kiosk was replaced by a… God forbid… Dunkin’ Donuts.

Passengers quickly jumped into problem-solving mode:

And, the brands began to respond:

Airport management jumped into the conversation:

It is good that airport management had a clear understanding that Dunkin Donuts is not worthy of being listed as a purveyor of “great” lattes.

No Starbucks, but who needs corporate coffee when we have two of Chicago’s best roasters available to give you the jitters!

HERE IS A COMPLETE GUIDE TO COFFEE OPTIONS IN MIDWAY AIRPORT:

Midway Triangle Food Court (just after security):

Dunkin Donuts
Cafe Espresso (run by the folks at & serving Big Shoulders Coffee)
Euro Cafe @ Hudson News (selling Intelligentsia Coffee– soy milk available)

Concourse A:

Dunkin’ Donuts

Concourse C:

Cafe Espresso (run by the folks at & serving Big Shoulders Coffee)

Baggage Claim:

Dunkin’ Donuts (reported- but not yet seen)

See the latest Midway Concessions Map here.

NOTE: Despite its city locations, Cafe L’Appetito does not offer coffee drinks beyond drip coffee using the airport’s standard brand, whatever that means.

Otherwise, keep in mind that there are two Starbucks just a few blocks away at:

6520 S Cicero Ave, Chicago, IL 60638
4701 S Cicero Ave, Chicago, IL 60632

As most frequent travelers know by now, Midway Airport replaced its long-standing favorites – including McDonald’s, Potbelly, Harry Caray’s, Manny’s, Ben & Jerry’s, and Lalo’s – with more upscale (or is it just expensive?) options including Tabo Sushi, Go Go White Sox, Home Run Inn, and DeCOLORES Burrito Joint.

Coffee options have also faced a big change, and you can read here about coffee in Midway Airport. Note- there are some great coffee options in Midway Airport if you know where to find them!

Midway now offers three full-service, sit-down restaurants, up from one location that it used to have, some offering extensive wine menus.

Midway Airport’s 2017 Dining Options:

Cafe L’Appetito:

This authentic Chicago Italian restaurants has multiple locations across the city. It has plenty of great dining options that are equidistant between a nice sit-down meal and a fast food sandwich on the run. Prices, portions, and wait times should appease most travelers. (Midway Triangle Food Court)

Go-Go White Sox Grill:

This Southside brand nudges out Harry Caray’s Northside vibe. It serves breakfast, burgers, pizza, entrees, and more. Travelers report being more satisfied with breakfast than by the lackluster lunches and dinners. (Concourse B)

DeColores:

Travelers aren’t left hungry for breakfast since McDonald’s and Potbelly’s departure as this Mexican fast food outlet offers satisfying breakfast burritos for a quick and filling bite on the run. DeColores is local Mexican, from the heart of the Chicago Pilsen neighborhood. It offers everything you’d expect from chips and fresh guac, to burritos, tacos, and other quick and hearty Mexican bites. (Midway Triangle Food Court)

Home Run Inn Pizza:

Another South Side purveyor enters the Midway dining scene! Home Run Inn is a great place to grab a thick slice of Chicago-style pizza, or even a sandwich or salad. (Midway Triangle Food Court, B14 is grab-and-go)

Tabo Sushi:

Chef Takashi Yagihashi is everywhere these days, showcasing his foods in cities across America as well as on TV. His Tabo Sushi restaurant has two locations at Midway Airport serving his ever-yummy maki rolls, sashimi, and other Japanese favorites. Travelers opinion is still out. (Midway Triangle Food Court is his full restaurant, B14 is grab-and-go)

HVAC Pub:

HVAC is a full-service restaurant with bar food, cocktails, and an extensive list of beers. They offer breakfast options. Best for travelers with time to spare as it is sit-down. (B5)

Tap & Pour:

A typical airport bar where one escapes the busyness of families and tourists, and gets internally lubricated with fellow business travelers as prep for the next flight. (B5)

True Burger Company:

They claim to offer “nothing but quality and healthy options including: Angus, Bison, Turkey, Salmon, and Veggie burgers.” Disappointing early reviews from travelers, especially from cost-conscious ones. (A5)

And, here are some holdovers from the past- the survivors of the major May 2017 restaurant shakeup.

Reilly’s Daughter:

This authentic Irish bar is tucked out the way, providing travelers a spot outside of the flow of travelers to do what the Irish do best- drink! Complaints are coming from regulars who have noted that management has changed, all of the staff has been replaced, and prices have doubled. Notice the huge drop in reviews for this old-time favorite that apparently has been ruined. (Midway Triangle Food Court)

Gold Coast Dogs:

Another holdover, and another source of recent quality complaints. Many are pleased with the authentic Chicago hot dogs- others complain about quality control and value issues. Many swear by their more fulfilling meals of Italian beef and the sausage sandwiches. (Midway Triangle Food Court)

Pegasus on the Fly:

Last but certainly not least, Pegasus is a Greek fast food place that leaves passengers on their toes, as they never can know what to expect in terms of service and food quality. Despite the unpredictable nature of their operation, it is still considered one of the most reliable value options at Midway Airport as $8 can get you filled up on a tasty gyro. They also have the gamut of spinach & feta pies, kabobs, Greek salad, and more. Their croissant sandwich breakfast is a favorite- and should satisfy everyone that depended on McDonald’s in the past. (Midway Triangle Food Court)

On May 12th, Midway Airport began a 3-year, $75 million shopping and dining upgrade. Old favorites including McDonald’s, Potbelly’s, and Harry Caray’s were closed down.

They reached their first milestone on May 20th with the launch of some new eateries. More upscale, or at least more expensive, options have replaced them.

We hear plenty of opinions about the changes from our Midway Airport hotel guests. However, we’ll turn to what people are saying online to let you hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. Keep in mind, people are creatures of habit, so not every complaint now will still be a complaint one year later when new habits are formed.

Despite the following disappoints, you can read about the great new Midway Airport restaurant options here.

As you can read, people are seriously missing their quick and easy food options in the airport. McDonald’s and Potbelly’s were a dependable part of flyer’s transits, especially for quick breakfasts, and they will be missed.

Despite the complaints- and there will always be complaints- we have also heard positive things about the new Midway Airport restaurants here.

As a 3-generation family of independent hoteliers, it is part of our responsibility to communicate the value we bring to the table, so that hotel guests can understand the superior offerings of our Midway Airport hotel.

As a point of comparison, there is a campus near Midway Airport – the Midway Hotel Center- with 10 hotels that play a crucial role in providing airport lodging for the hundreds of thousands of airport travelers that need rooms near Midway Airport every year. In general, they are solid hotels.

However, we at Carlton Inn Midway proudly offer competitive advantages that make our hotel the preferred choice of many Midway Airport travelers.

01

SHUTTLE SERVICE

Midway Hotel Center’s shuttle runs on fixed schedules. This can leave you standing curbside at the airport or impatiently waiting for your ride to catch your flight.

Carlton Inn Midway provides a 24/7 Midway Airport shuttle service that fits your schedule. We act on demand, saving you from the unnecessary waiting of a fixed timetable. This allows you to spend less time waiting and no time worrying.

We also offer complimentary local shuttle service driving our guests to local restaurants, bars, and shops. We make it easy for anyone traveling without a car!

02

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Midway Hotel Center is located in Bedford Park, IL. It is not connected to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train system. Therefore, to catch a ride into downtown or elsewhere in the city, you’ll need to first wait for the airport shuttle, navigate to the airport elevated train station, and then catch your ride to downtown.

Carlton Inn Midway is in Chicago. We are located just a block from the CTA Orange line elevated train that will connect you to the entire city for just a few bucks. Walk the block to the station, or if your feet are sore at the end of the day or the weather is inclement, request a complimentary shuttle ride.

Expect to save 45-minutes in transit time going from the Carlton Inn Midway into the city compared to the Midway Hotel Center. That is an hour and a half saved per round-trip – time better spent sipping a cocktail on the Hancock’s 96th Floor or on the ferris wheel at Navy Pier.

03

LOCATION

Although located outside of the City of Chicago, the Midway Hotel Center describes itself as “perfectly situated for your next business trip or vacation.” As mentioned above, the CTA train transit times into the city increase by about 45 minutes per direction as compared to our hotel. And, there is no viable neighborhood near the hotel center, making visitors dependent on eating the campus’ limited food options and left without any shopping opportunities.

Located inside of the City of Chicago, the Carlton Inn Midway is a 14-minute drive (without traffic) into downtown. There are dozens of restaurants in our neighborhood and hundreds of stores & bars all within walking distance or by using our complimentary shuttle. We are in a stable and, ethnically diverse area, called Archer Heights, that is known for its second-generation Polish heritage.

04

PARKING

Midway Hotel Center charges an extra $10/night (on top of your room rate) to park your car.

Carlton Inn Midway offers free guest parking.

05

NOISE

Midway Hotel Center is located a few blocks from both The Belt Railway Company and Midway Airport. This leads to serious sound issues for guests. A local newspaper featured this story here on the Midway Hotel Center in June 2017.

Carlton Inn Midway is 1.7 miles from the airport and not near the rail yards. We have no chronic noise issues.

06

SERVICE

The Midway Hotel Center is run by a management company that has 165 branded properties in its management portfolio.

The Carlton Inn Midway is an unbranded property and managed by a Chicago family that has been in the hotel business for three generations. We hire and train with care to ensure the highest level of customer service. We see no reason that our humble Chicago motel shouldn’t provide the superior customer service typically found in 5-star properties because customer service doesn’t require high prices- it just takes a combination of professionalism and well-wishing. As our management truly cares about guest experiences, our entire team takes on that vision.

07

VALUE

The Midway Hotel Center’s properties offer a variety of complimentary amenities. However, none include a full suite of them.

The Carlton Inn Midway offers complimentary breakfast, parking, wifi, airport shuttle, local area shuttle, premium movie channels, fitness center, and business center. For one price, you get it all!

There you have it- why our motel is Midway Airport’s Best Hotel!
We believe in value, quality, and service.
Come stay with us the next time life brings you to the great city of Chicago!
