Green Chicago Hotel
Carlton Inn Midway hotel takes its role seriously as a steward of the environment. Through the implementation of hospitality “best practices”, we have reduce our carbon footprint and lessened the burdens that we and our guests place on our environment.
Green Management Agenda
We have formed an Environmental Committee that is responsible for developing an Environmental Green Design Plan for energy, water, and solid waste use. And, we manage our hotel’s environmental performance by monitoring the electric, gas, water, and waste usage information on a monthly and annual basis. We keep a green interior designer on retainer to assist with design decisions.
Green Cleaning and Maintenance
Our daily actions and purchasing is the first place we look in the development of our green practices. In 2003, we took our first action to making our property more environmentally friendly. Our practices include:
Energy Efficient Light Bulbs: The hotel has been retrofitted to accommodate energy efficient bulbs.
Towel and Linen Reuse Program: Guests have the opportunity to do their part by choosing to reuse bed linens and towels, reducing energy, water and detergents required for daily laundering. We change sheets and pillowcases on stayovers every other day unless the guest requests daily changing.
Environmentally Friendly Products: The hotel is committed to purchasing non-toxic environmentally friendly products, including purchasing cleaning and laundry supplies that are biodegradable.
Water Conservation: All guest bathrooms have low flow shower heads and faucets (2.5 gallons per minute showerheads). All guest and public bathrooms have toilets which use 1.6 gallons per flush.
Reduced Amenities Waste: Guest bathrooms are outfitted with Wave Brand Spa shampoo, shower gel, hand soap and lotion dispensers; reducing the amount of plastic bottles and partially used bar soap in landfills.
Green Office Practices
The Carlton Inn Midway is firmly committed to greening our office practices to reduce the impact that our activities have on the environment.
Energy Saver Electronics and Equipment: The hotel purchases Energy Star rated appliances, electronics and equipment including televisions, water heaters, copiers, and computers.
Energy Saving Practices: All office computers are set to go to sleep mode after 5 minutes. The hotel prints audits and internal documents on the back side of used paper. We always ask a guest at check out if they need a receipt before printing. Our paperless payroll processing reports are all designed to automatically be electronically stored. And, we encourage our vendors to e-bill rather than send paper invoices. We use recycled toner cartridges, and recycle them when they expire.
Recycled Paper: The hotel purchases paper made of 30% recycled content and also has a paper re-use program.
We encourage the use of public transportation, and we sell 1 and 3 day CTA passes at our front desk to make use of public transport easy for our guests. We also provide shuttle service for our guests so as to reduce the need to rent vehicles.
Public Transportation: We are located just one block from the CTA Elevated Train which connects to all points in Chicago. It is the greenest way to travel in the city, and we encourage our guests to use it. We offer free, on-demand shuttle service to and from the station to meet any of your needs, which may include having tired feet after so much walking downtown, carrying too many bags, or to avoid inclement weather.
Shuttle Van: We provide free shuttle service to and from Midway Airport and any point within 2 miles of our property for our guests. This allows our guests to visit Chicago without needing to rent a vehicle. It allows for easier access to the public transportation options. We perform routine preventative maintenance on hotel vehicles including tire pressure to get maximum performance and gas mileage.
Bicycling: It is a growing trend in Chicago to bicycle as transport. Every morning one can witness the stream of office workers streaming into downtown from every angle on their self-propelled riding machines. Riding along the lakefront has long been a popular activity. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has information on bringing your bicycle on a city bus and bringing your bicycle on the Elevated train.
